Champ Peanut plants are a special Virginia-type of peanut plant bred to have a shorter growing season – nearly 60 days shorter than the growing season of most peanuts, making it a good choice for colder climates. They are also disease resistant and can be garden-planted or container-grown. It’s one of most widely grown crops in the world because of its flavorful, edible seed that you can turn into delicious peanut butter! The Champ Peanut yields 50 to 60 pods with one or two extra-large nuts per pod.

Plant 12” inches apart in a full sun location after the danger of frost is over. Peanuts need a light moist and sandy soil with generous amounts of compost and manure to grow. Build a mound of soil up around each plant to provide plenty of drainage for the plants, water often but do not over water. These plants can also be grown in containers, but make sure it drains well. If using containers, you can help extend the growing season by sheltering plants when there is a danger of frost. Your peanut plant will be ready for harvest when the leaves begin to turn yellow, usually in late summer or early fall. When ready, pull it out by the root and allow it to dry for three to four days.
